My route to proofreading
I've always loved words and achieved my MA (Hons) in English Literature at the University of St Andrews. I also love a challenge and qualified as a Chartered Accountant, training with KPMG. I spent more than ten years working as an accountant/internal auditor in the manufacturing and retail sectors.
During this time, I was writing and editing various types of document, including reports, company documents, annual reports and financial statements. This showed me where to concentrate my energy and how to combine my commercial experience with my passion for words.
My commitment to the editorial profession
I have taken, and passed with merit, the Basic Proofreading by Distance Learning course by the Publishing Training Centre. I am an entry-level member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP), complying with its Code of Practice. At the start of 2018, I became the SfEP's local group coordinator for Manchester.
