Looking back before I move forward: 2024

Start at the end!

Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading Advanced Professional Member logo

On Christmas Eve, I received confirmation that I have become an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP)!

This means that I’ve demonstrated ‘a high level of professional competence and substantial experience’.

I can’t begin to say how chuffed I am about this. This was a goal on my five-year plan and I’ve arrived a year earlier than I’d planned.

APM has been in my plan since I started LdC Editorial in 2017.

Going back to the start of the year for a whistle-stop tour of my business highlights

I decided my business was sufficiently established to warrant a logo.

Thank you to Claire Peacock!

I won two prizes

Best Independent Proof Reader & Editor – Northern England

And from the IE 100 Awards: LdC Editorial - Independent Proof Reader & Editor of The Year - Manchester – UK

Thank you so much to whoever nominated me 🙏

CPD – co-mentoring

I got to co-mentor with Hazel Bird. Co-mentoring is an arrangement to give feedback on each other's working practices – we learned from each other.

It felt like receiving a prize when Hazel suggested it after I'd got in touch about an Editorial Cuppa mentoring question!

Do check out Hazel's blog if you'd like to know more about the exercise.

I highly recommend giving it a try!

I’ve got the hang of making videos for #TheEditorialCuppa and I’ve got a YouTube channel.

It’s a pleasure to answer questions from authors and editorial colleagues.

I’ve always been nervous about marketing so this is a win in itself!

Podcasts

I enjoyed chatting with Erin Buck, Deborah Kevin and Gillian Whitney this year about my career change from accountant to editor and demystifying editing for an author.

Business Book Awards 2024

I stepped head first out of my comfort zone to join the Intellectual Perspective Press table at the Business Book Awards in London in September.

It was such a big deal to meet Debbie Jenkins in real life! I'd have been so gutted to miss the chance!

I got to meet some of my brilliant authors, share time with friends, and see a book I copyedited win an award.

I was properly stressed about fatigue, aching joints and perimenopause stuff. And I was so grateful for the generous support I received – thank you so much!

I was glad that I went. Though I needed recovery time afterwards, attending felt like a triumph! And I really enjoyed myself 🤩

This is a perfect place to put my reminiscing about 2024 on hold. Time to think about the future now 🤩💜

I was asked a question specifically about ‘professional mentoring’ for my video series, The Editorial Cuppa. Professional mentoring has a formality to it that implies more than a casual relationship, so it may come with a commitment of time, energy or money. This blog covers my research into editorial mentoring.
